What Do Old Photos Tell Us About the Meaning of Life and Love?

A woman’s funeral was held today. Her family had created a video collage from old photos. You could see the woman they remembered in her expressions — proud, joyful, loving.

I knew the family argued, but that was okay. I could see the happy faces around the Thanksgiving table and still imagine an argument happening in the kitchen. This woman smiled, laughed — triumphant.

We stumble through life. Even those who think we are loners are defined and nurtured by the times we come together.

After I watched the collage of this woman’s life and family I played the intro to Modern Love. It’s a show my husband would never watch in a million years. This means that I watch it only when we’ve had a disagreement and are spending a night apart. Quite the irony there — my only chance to watch a show about romantic love is when my own feels badly broken.

Still I believe in love. “We face the music together and throw our hats in to the ring.” I replay the intro. It’s been a long time since Shaun kissed me like that.

Why do I consider love so sacred, so worth fighting for? Do I love myself enough? or others too much?

I wish I knew.
